Q&A
What is permaculture landscaping, and how is it different from regular landscaping?
Permaculture goes beyond aesthetics to create a self-sustaining, low-maintenance ecosystem in your yard. While traditional landscaping might focus on ornamentals that require constant watering and care, our approach designs with nature. We use native plants, improve soil health, and manage water wisely to build a resilient garden that thrives in Omaha's climate with less input from you over time. It's landscaping that works with the local environment, not against it.
My Omaha yard has areas where the soil is hard and grass won't grow. Can you help?
Absolutely. Soil compaction is a common issue for local lawns, often caused by foot traffic, construction, or heavy clay soils. We don't just address the surface. Our solutions involve techniques like core aeration and adding organic amendments to loosen the soil, improve drainage, and reintroduce vital nutrients. This creates a healthy foundation so your plants and grass can establish strong root systems and thrive.
How does your background in building restoration apply to landscaping?
My experience restoring the Benson photography studio taught me to see a project holistically, from the foundation up. I apply that same principle to your landscape. Just as we wouldn't install beautiful flooring on a compromised subfloor, we won't plant a garden in poor soil. We assess and repair the underlying structure—addressing drainage, grading, and soil health—to ensure your beautiful, functional garden is built on a solid, lasting foundation.
Business Profile
Gus Von Roenn's journey to becoming Omaha's trusted permaculture expert began far from a job site—in a classroom at Creighton University. Originally from Milwaukee, he fell in love with Omaha and decided to put down roots. His foundational skills in restoration were forged hands-on, meticulously remodeling a near-condemned 4,400 sq ft Benson photography studio with his wife, Laura. That project, which involved everything from refurbishing historic tin ceilings to updating electrical systems, gave him the confidence and comprehensive skill set to launch Von Roenn Restoration in 2010. Today, at Von Roenn Permaculture Solutions, Gus applies that same meticulous, start-to-finish craftsmanship and commitment to clear communication to transform Omaha yards. He understands that great landscaping isn't just about plants; it's about building a resilient, functional ecosystem for your home.
