Common Questions
What kind of shrubs do best in Big Bear's climate, and can you help with planting them?
Our alpine environment requires hardy, cold-tolerant shrubs. We specialize in varieties like Manzanita, Sierra Laurel, and native currants that are adapted to our seasons. Yes, our full-service shrub planting includes selecting the right plant for your specific site, proper soil preparation with our recommended amendments, and expert installation to give your new shrubs the best start in our mountain soil.
My lawn in Big Bear has bare patches and some areas the sprinklers don't reach. What's the best approach?
This is a common issue here due to our terrain and soil. We recommend a two-part solution. First, we can assess and help adjust or supplement your irrigation to ensure even coverage. Second, for the bare patches, we provide high-quality grass seed blends suited for our climate and can advise on soil aeration and top-dressing to promote healthy, thick regrowth that can withstand our local conditions.
When is the best time for shrub pruning and disease management in the mountains?
Timing is crucial in our climate. For most shrubs, late winter or early spring, just before new growth starts, is ideal for major pruning. For disease and insect management, early detection is key. Our staff can identify common local issues like powdery mildew or aphid infestations and recommend targeted, environmentally mindful treatments. We also offer shrub care services to handle pruning and health management for you.
Meet the Team
Eminger's Mountain Nursery is a Big Bear Lake institution with roots dating back to 1978, when founders John and Jackie Eminger first began selling plants. In 2001, new owners Chuck and Tina Thompson moved the nursery to its current home at 41223 Big Bear Boulevard, transforming the site from a seasonal ski shop into a year-round gardening destination. The nursery thrives on the unique challenges and rewards of our high-altitude climate, specializing in trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetables that are proven to flourish in the alpine environment. Our team combines decades of local planting experience with a curated selection of quality plants, soils, fertilizers, and unique garden pottery. We are a trusted resource for both lifelong residents and seasonal visitors, dedicated to helping every garden in Big Bear Lake reach its full potential.
