Mulch erosion is a common issue here. We recommend using a heavier, shredded hardwood mulch that interlocks, and we install it at the proper depth with a defined edge or border. For sloped areas, we can also use erosion control netting or consider a switch to decorative gravel or river rock in problem spots to create a more permanent solution.

The key is proper installation. We excavate the area, install a sturdy, permeable landscape fabric to suppress weeds, and create a solid base with compacted road base or decomposed granite. We then secure the perimeter with durable edging, like steel or heavy plastic, before placing the rocks. This method locks everything in place, preventing the shifting that Fresno homeowners often deal with.

For truly low-maintenance areas that combat both erosion and shifting, we often recommend decomposed granite (DG) for pathways and patios, or larger, multi-sized river rock for garden beds. Both materials are excellent for our climate, require no watering, and stay in place much better than standard mulch or small gravel when installed correctly with the right borders.
