Moss often thrives in thin, compacted, or acidic soil common in our area. A thick, healthy lawn created through consistent care blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, which is the primary way to naturally prevent moss from establishing and spreading.

We use a proactive, multi-step approach. First, we apply pre-emergent herbicides in early spring to stop weed seeds (like crabgrass) from germinating. Throughout the growing season, we spot-treat existing broadleaf weeds with targeted post-emergent applications. Most importantly, our fertilization and soil health practices are designed to build a robust turf. A thick, vigorous lawn is the best defense, as it crowds out weeds and leaves them little room to grow.

Proper mowing is crucial. We recommend keeping your mower blade sharp and never cutting more than one-third of the grass blade height at a time. For most Covington lawns, maintaining a height of 3 to 3.5 inches encourages deeper roots, shades the soil to prevent weed seeds from sprouting, and helps the grass better withstand summer heat and drought.
